What Is A Mug Cake?

Mug cakes are a single serving dessert made in a mug or a bowl. When you don’t want to make a full cake or don’t have the time, you can make a quicker version in a single serving mug or bowl. You simply use the cake mix of your choice, in this recipe I used a strawberry cake mix. Then, add a few tablespoons of water. That’s it! Mix it well and microwave for 2-3 minutes.

Mug cakes continue to cook even after they are done, so you don’t want to over cook it or it will be dry.

Add-ins are optional. You can add-in chocolate chips or other treats like pie filling, fruit, spices, nuts, candy, or cookies.

My complete guide to mug cakes gives you over 25 cake mix combinations, such as lemon cake mix with blueberries or spice cake mix with chocolate chips. There are over 30 add-in recipe ideas! Plus, a measuring chart from 4oz. to 20oz. sized mugs.

Pro Tip: If the top of your cake is spongy and springs back when you touch it, it’s done. If you still see uncooked cake batter on top, cook again in 30 second intervals until it turns spongy.

How To Make Strawberry Cake Mix In A Mug

For this strawberry cake mix mug cake recipe I used:

  • 6 tablespoons of strawberry cake mix. (Duncan Hines, Pillsbury, Betty Crocker, or any off brand will do)
  • 2-3 tablespoons of water. You want your batter to be the same consistency of cake batter
  • 1 tablespoon of chocolate chips

Microwave your mug cake for 2-3 minutes depending on your microwave. Start out by only microwaving for 2 minutes. If it’s still not done, microwave in 15 or 30 second intervals.

Top with cream cheese icing, your favorite ice cream, cool whip, or leave as is.

Note: To make this recipe in the large 20oz. mug in the picture, I doubled the recipe.

Do You Use Eggs In Mug Cakes?

Eggs are not needed for a boxed cake mix. You will only need to use eggs if you are making your mug cakes from scratch.

What Do You Top Mug Cakes With?

You can top your cake with either cream cheese frosting, cool whip, any flavored ice cream, melted butter, chocolate or caramel syrup, powdered sugar or fruit. There are so many different ways to make mug cakes.
