Re-usable Lined Plastic Bags {sewing}

This FREE sewing project is a great craft to make for kids lunches or snacks on the go! They are washable and small enough to take with you to ball games, kids events, picnics, and you can also carry baby supplies or sewing supplies in them, store perishables for freezing, or use it to store bath and beauty products such as hair clips, make-up, or beach accessories.

I made these with a towel from the dollar store. You can use towels or fabric.
To start, cut your fabric 7″x15″ inches. 7 inches wide and 15 inches long.
Next, cut the sides of 6 plastic grocery baggies so they lay out long and flat. Stack them on top of each other so you now have one pile of all 6 baggies. Set your iron on low heat or permanent press. Place a piece of paper or parchment paper on top and iron over quickly so the plastic bags begin melting slightly together. You will have to slide iron over baggies several times, then turn stack over and iron other side so that all the baggies melted into each other slightly.
Next, pin the layers of bags to RIGHT side of the fabric.
Sew the layers of plastic bags onto RIGHT side of fabric leaving ONE end open so you can turn it right side out.
Turn right side out. All sides should be sewed together except one end.
Next, fold in edges of the top that is still open about 1/4″, then sew up the opening.
Next, fold end of baggie over 2 inches.
Then fold the end under so it will look like this.
Sew the right and left sides together. Do not sew the top! This will stay open so you can put things in the baggie.
Your done! See how easy!

**I used the plastic baggies from Wal-mart to line these with. They are considered safe if made contact with food. You can read about the plastics we use on a daily basis in our homes that are harmful HERE. Wal-mart plastic baggies contain Polyethylene

”which is also found in jugs of milk, water, juice, shampoo and detergent, as well as cereal-box liners. Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE / #4) is used for cling wraps and food storage bags, garbage and grocery bags, squeeze bottles, and coatings for milk cartons and hot-beverage cups. These plastics are generally good choices as they transmit no known chemicals into food and are generally recyclable”.

    what a unique idea! If you were going to use these as lunch or snack bags do you feel this plastic is food safe? how do you close it so the food stays fresh? thanks for sharing kathleen

    • That’s a great question! These baggies are safe! Walmart bags are made of Polyethylene which is also used in cling wraps and food storage bags, garbage and grocery bags, squeeze bottles, and coatings for milk cartons and hot-beverage cups. It’s been found that these plastics are generally good choices as they transmit no known chemicals into food and are generally recyclable. I added a link at the end of the post where it lists all the chemicals in plastics that are harmful. :)

  3. I would like to make some of these for my grandson’s lunch box. Have you washed your baggies? If used in a child’s lunch box I would want to be able to wash them. Thanks for the tutorial.

  4. I love this idea. At some point, I’m going to have to get the sewing machine out and make some. I’m really starting to notice all the plastic we use and throwaway after one use. These would be a great replacement for some of it.
