How to make self-rising flour.

No need to worry if you are out of self-rising flour in the middle of making a recipe.  If you have all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt you can make your own.

Yesterday I made a delicious strawberry cake.  I spent extra time mixing the ingredients one-by-one as the recipe called for, I even got up early to make it because I was so excited to see how it was going to turn out. After I mixed all the ingredients together and baked it for 45 minutes (it was in a loaf pan), when I pulled it out of the oven it looked fine until I cut in to it. The center was like dough and all stuck together. There was no way I could serve this cake. (or eat it all by myself)   Then I realized it called for self-rising flour. I learned when a recipe calls for self-rising flour you cannot use regular all-purpose flour.

So that cake was a total flop, but I will be making it again because the batter was sooooo good I know it will be an amazing cake.  Oh, actually it is!  Here it is…..Best Homemade Buttermilk Strawberry Cake with Strawberry Cream Cheese Icing

I had no idea you could make your own self-rising flour.  I had already gone out and bought self-rising flour then I learned you can make your own, and it’s super easy!

Simply measure out all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. So simple.

The reason you cannot use regular flour when a recipe calls for self-rising flour is because self-rising flour already has baking powder and salt in it.

Recipes that call for self-rising flour do not also call for baking powder and salt in the recipe.  So if you use regular flour you will not be instructed to add in baking powder and salt…..so to avoid a flop like mine was….simply make your own.

In the ‘make your own self rising four’ recipe you mention baking ‘powder’ sometimes and then refer to baking ‘soda’ at other times. What are the actual three ingredients: all purpose flour, salt, and baking ?.
